PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for recording data in an optional recording format and reproducing the data regardless of the type of an optical storage medium and to provide an optical storage medium in which data are recorded in various recording formats. SOLUTION: This method for recording data on the optical storage medium in an optional recording medium includes a process for selecting a recording format for data to be recorded on the optical storage medium, a process for recording the data on the optical storage medium in the selected recording format, and a process for adding and recording recording format information showing the recording format for the data. By the present invention, data are recorded in a recording format selected by a user in recording the data, and recording format information is recorded as well to thereby be able to record the data on one optical storage medium in various recording formats and to correctly reproduce the data.
