An active material of positive electrode for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, comprising particles of a double oxide containing Li and Co, wherein the double oxide further contains element M<1> and M<2>, the element M<1> being at least one member selected from the group consisting of Mg, Cu and Zn, the element M<2> being at least one member selected from the group consisting of Al, Ca, Ba, Sr, Y and Zr, the element M<1> uniformly distributed in the particles, the element M<2> distributed more in a surface layer portion than in an internal portion of the particles.
