The present invention is directed to a method of blocking the cytotoxic activity of FcgammaRIII receptor-positive immune cells in a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis using an effective amount of soluble FcgammaRIII receptors. The soluble FcgammaRIII receptors of the invention are specific for immunoglobulin G of under-class 1 (IgG1) and/or 3 (IgG3).
