PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubbing apparatus which does not cause alignment irregularity due to a seam joint of rubbing cloth stuck to a rubbing roller and to provide a liquid crystal display formed by using the same. SOLUTION: A dummy seam joint is formed on the circumference of the rubbing roller 1 by forming a slit 3 on the rubbing cloth 2 of the rubbing roller 1 and the total surface to be subjected to rubbing is brought into contact with the seam joint (slit). Thereby, the appearance of alignment region different from the region other than the seam joint which is caused in the conventional rubbing cloth of the rubbing roller is prevented.
