PURPOSE: A method for controlling a laser source in an optical disk device is provided to prevent unnecessary erroneous operation and to protect user's eyes from laser generated due to erroneous operations. CONSTITUTION: It is confirmed whether a disk cover is opened or closed according to a switching state of a cover switch(S53). When the disk cover is closed, insertion of a disk and the kind of the disk are confirmed through FG signals generated by operating a spindle motor. The insertion of the disk and the kind of the disk are confirmed by the number of the FG signals(S55). Upon the confirmation of the insertion of the disk and the kind of the disk, power is applied to a laser source and the disk is played(S57).
