A process for preparation of a modified polyester of improved mechanical and rheological properties involving mixing of a polyester with a hyperbranched polymer (HBP), melting of the mixture, and cooling to give a solid, which is then subjected to solid phase post condensation is new. Independent claims are also included for (1) conversion of the post-condensation mixture to a product in further process step; (2) an additive packet for preparation of the modified polyester comprising: an HBP, one or more further additives, especially impact modifiers, nucleating agents, catalysts, colorants, pigments, stabilizers, compatibility agents, mol. wt. increasing agents, elasticity increasing additives, strengthened fibers, and fillers.
