An edge trimming machine comprises a pair of rotary cutters 2 for cutting the edges of a metal strip 29, and sensing means ahead of the cutters for effecting transverse movement of the cutters. The cutter heads 1 are mounted on slides 3 urged towards each other by fluidpressure means 7 to positions determined by nuts 5 adjustable simultaneously by a threaded rod 6. The slides 3 are carried on a saddle 4 adjusted by fluid-pressure means 10. The saddle 4 carries a cross-head 11 carrying a slide 14 on which mountings 15 are adjustable by a threaded rod 17. The mountings 15 support a shaft 19 connected by bevel gearing with the feeler arms 22. When the arms 22 are rocked by irrgularities in the strip, the shaft 19 is oscillated to rock levers 24, 25 attached respectively to the body and spool of a valve 26, the valve parts being engaged by springs to eliminate backlash. If the feeler arms do not move in unison, the valve body parts move to cause the piston 10 to adjust the saddle so that the strip moves centrally between the cutters. Spring-loaded rollers 30 prevent vibration. The slide 14 is moved longitudinally of the strip by fluidpressure means 31 under the control of cams 33 and valves 32 (which, contrary to Fig. 1, are in contact) to position the feelers 23 while the ends 38, 55 of the strip are passing through the apparatus. If the strip runs out of line, vertical safety rods are actuated to operate the fluid means 7 to withdraw the cutters and to stop the machine and the strip-feed. In modifications, the slides are moved electrically or mechanically or the milling spindles are horizontal.</p> |
