Increasing the thermal stability and hydrophilicity of surfaces of polar and non-polar substrates, especially for medical applications, involves coating the substrate surface with the aid of plasma polymerization and fixing the applied coating on the surface by irradiation with UV light. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) polymer-based products for medical applications comprising a hydrophobic base substrate and a polymeric surface coating which is completely wettable with water and stable to steam sterilization; and (b) haemodialysis filters with filters caps made of polypropylene with a steam sterilization-resistant coating.
