The system has an exhaust pipe (2) connected via a branch (3) to a heat exchanger (5) with exhaust collection tank (4). A pivoted/turning flap (7) is located in the connection (6) between pipe and branch, and closes the branch pipe when in normal position. The branch pipe has a pipe coupling (8) between connection point and exhaust collection tank. This contains an intermediate layer (9) to prevent heat exchange. The heat exchanger is a flat pipe or panel exchanger, and heats the liquid coolant for the engine.
