PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To transfer the three-dimensional surface shape (irregularities, etc.), having a predetermined flat pattern to compact without any chips or cracks with high dimensional accuracy by using a unit-axial compacting machine having a die. SOLUTION: Projections 8 which are formed of a polymer viscoelastomer with the rubber hardness of 70-95 and have a predetermined flat pattern are formed on press surfaces 2a, 6a of dies 2, 6. The raw powder such as ceramic and metal is accommodated in a forming cavity, the projections are brought into contact with the powder, the powder is uni-axially compacted to obtain a compact 11. A projection 8B is elastically deformed according to the pressure of the powder, a recess 12 is transferred to the compact 11, and the dies 2, 6 are released from the compact 11. The projection 8 is released from the recess 12 while elastically restored to the shape before the elastic deformation.
