PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium suitable for high density recording. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is provided with a first substrate layer 4 consisting essentially of Cr, a second substrate layer 5 consisting essentially of CrO and a magnetic layer 6 consisting essentially of a CoPt alloy and/or a CoPtCr alloy on a substrate 2. The first substrate layer 4, the second substrate layer 5 and the magnetic layer 6 are formed in this sequence from the substrate 2 side. Therefore the magnetic layer 6 exhibits high coercive force and also high S/N at the time of recording and reproducing. Accordingly, even when magnetic signals are recorded with high density, recording and reproducing can be executed stably and certainly.
