In a slide member such as a big-end bearing 6, the slide surface is formed of an aggregate of two different metal crystals. A first region R 1 comprises (2hhh) oriented metal crystals 15 having a body-centered cubic structure with their (2hhh) planes (by Miller indices) oriented toward the slide surface. The content is set in a range of 20% to 100%. These crystals have a high hardness and are in the form of fish-like metal crystals in the slide surface. A second region R 2 comprises (hhh) oriented metal crystals 16 having a body-centered cubic structure with their (hhh) planes oriented toward the slide surface. The content is set in a range of 40% to 100%. These crystals are in the form of hexagonal pyramid-shaped metal crystals. The slide member is made by a multi-step electrolytic plating process. Slide members comprising other forms of generally pyramid-shaped metal crystals are also disclosed.
