PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the load of a user and improve operational capability. SOLUTION: Modes of various functions in an electronic timepiece exist hierarchically in such a manner that a lower mode exists under a higher mode so that a user can choose a necessary mode at each level and the user can confirm the chosen mode at each level and switch in turn the name of the modes chosen at each level to indicate what is called an autoreturn indication (201 to 210). Instead of switching in turn, whole or part of name of the modes chosen at each level may be moved in level order and indicated in so-called a scroll indication. Also a long name of mode not contained in a display screen may be scrolled in the autoreturn indication.
