PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To hold a stainless steel strip to beautiful specular glossness while keeping a furnace operating efficiency, in the case of stopping the operation of a bright annealing furnace for stainless steel strip. SOLUTION: In the case of stopping the operation in a heat treatment of the stainless steel strip except a ferritic stainless steel in the bright annealing furnace. the atmosphere in the furnace is made to inert gas or reducing gas containing the inert gas as the main gas and the holding temp. at the heating zone in the furnace is dropped in a range of 700 deg.C below the heating temp. at the operation. In the case of executing the heat treatment to the ferritic stainless steel strip, the atmosphere in the furnace is made to the inert gas except N2 or reducing gas containing it as the main gas and the holding temp. at the heating zone in the furnace is dropped in the range of 700 deg.C below the heating temp. at the operation.
