A head mountable apparatus is described for transmitting an image to the user's eye using switchable holographic optical elements. In one embodiment, an optical system is provided that is configured to receive an image provide d by an image generator and which forms a light path along which light is transmitted from the image generator to an eye of the user. The optical syst em includes a first section disposed at an end of the optical system adjacent t o a user's eye and a second section configured to transmit light received by t he optical system to the first section. The first section of the optical system includes at least one switchable holographic optical element.
