PURPOSE: The addition of solid catalysts such as metal oxide powder into the hydroxy-aldehyde reaction solution, has problems that the measurement of the solid catalysts are difficult and the solid catalyst should be removed from product mixture. CONSTITUTION: The problems can be solved by using a liquid catalyst that is molar ratio of acid to Mg is 1.5 to 20.3 with 10 to 60% magnesium salts of alkaneic acid containing 2 to 8 C atoms or its mixture, or 40 to 90% alkaneic acid containing 2 to 8 C atoms or its mixture. Or liquid containing Mg catalyst can be produced by reacting Mg or MgO with oversupplied suitable alkaneic acid in a specific molar ratio under suitable condition, and respective hydroxy aldehydes are converted by using Mg salt-alkaneic acid liquid product as catalytic liquid under suitable reaction conditions for producing desired dihydroxy esther.
