PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain excellent heat resistance by using an amorphous silica fiber as the main component, incorporating one or more kinds of alumina fiber, aluminosilcate fiber and aluminoborosilicate fibers as a reinforcing fiber, and fusing and binding the fibers with a binder comprising borosilicate and/or aluminaborosilicate. SOLUTION: The porous ceramic material contains 50 to 80 wt.% amorphous silica fiber and 20 to 50 wt.% reinforcing inorg. fiber comprising one or more kinds of alumna fiber, aluminosilicate fiber and aluminoborosilicate fiber, and contains borosilicate or aluminoborosilicate 3 to 7.5 wt.% of the fiber amt. to fuse and bind the fibers. The ceramic material has >=95% porosity, >=50μm pore diameter and <0.21 W/m.K thermal conductivity. A boron compd. such as BN acts as a suppressing material for the crystallization of silica and reacts with silica during calculation at 1200 to 1400 deg.C. The boron compd. reacts with borosilicate, silica and alumina to produce aluminoborosilicate, which fuses and binds the inorg. fibers.
