The present invention provides a process and systsem for the removal of butadiene from a cracked gas stream prior to entering a front end hydrogenation reacto r in an olefin production facility, comprising the steps of contacting the cracked gas stre am with an absorbent in an absorber tower to separate C2 components from C3 and heavier components, hydrogenating acetylenes in the C2 vapor phase stream in a front-end hydrogenation reactor, separating butadiene from the C3 and heavier components liquid phase stream and recovering butadiene.
