PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain compactness, power saving and an improved light emitting characteristic by forming a pair of translucent outside electrodes on the outer surface of tubular glass bulb having a fluorescent film applied to the inner surface, and sealing electric discharge medium. SOLUTION: Both ends of a translucent glass bulb 1 having a straight tubular form and having a fluorescent film applied to the inner surface thereof are sealed hermetically, and electric discharge medium is sealed. On the outer surface of this glass bulb 1, a pair of translucent band-shaped outside electrodes 3, 4 are formed along the axis of the bulb 1, thereby providing a fluorescent lamp L1 . This lamp L1 is connected to a high frequency wave lighting circuit unit 5 to supply high frequency power to the outer electrodes 3, 4, causing the generation of electric discharge in the bulb 1 by high frequency electric field. The discharge ionizes and excites the discharge medium to generate ultraviolet rays, and the rays are converted into visible light through 2 fluorescent material coat 2 and radiated to the outside via the glass bulb 1. |
