When the calculated line feed pitch (k) is not in 0.5 millimeter units, the line feed pitch is rounded off to obtain a carriage return pitch k' in 0.5 millimeter units and the irreducible necessary effective form length L=k'Xn at this time is calculated. Then a value C=M-L for adjusting the settings of the upper and lower margins is calculated. Then when the value C is even, C/2 is added to the set values of the upper and lower margins respectively. When the C is odd, on the other, (C+1)/2 is added to the set value of the upper margin and (C-1)/2 is added to the set value of the lower margin.
