An intermediate product comprising fibres mainly distributed in two orientations forming an angle with one another is used. A spreader/lapper (13A, 13B) is fed with this intermediate product and deposits the intermediate product in alternate folds onto its exit conveyor, to form a lap of superposed layers which is such that the main orientations of the fibres in each layer form an angle with the main orientations of the fibres of the contiguous layers, and the lap is subjected to a fixing treatment, for example by means of a needling machine (14A, 14B).
