Carbon black is obtd. from rubber waste by: (a) prelimmary grading to 1-3 cm size; (b) taking through a long reactor starting with a thermal stock at entry of 450-550 deg.C. and decreasing to the exit at 60-80 deg.C, giving degration without burning. The resultant is collected in the form of balls; (c) The cooled balls are treated to separate and isolate the carbon grains; (d) the carbon grains are ground to form carbon black powder. Also claimed is the prodn. equipment comprising a long reactor with temp. control at the entry and exit as min.; hot air contra-flow injection into the reactor; a separator, down stream, of the reactor to separate the carbon black from metal particles and a granulator downstream of the separator. Pref. the reactor input temp. is pref. 500 deg.C and the exit temp. 70 deg.C maintained by contra flow hot air initially at 50 deg.C. The reactor is a cylinder 6-7 M long slightly inclined and turning on its axis. The separator is magnetic and then finished with electrostatic sepn.. USE/ADVANTAGE - Prodn. of carbon black is partic. for reinforcing or dilution loading from waste rubber in a low cost small size equipment capable of treating a wide variety of waste rubber.
