Water-soluble copolymer (A) having K value 15-120 (determined by the method of Fikentscher on a 1 wt.% aq. soln. of the Na salt at 25 deg. C and pH 7) comprises (mole%) (a) 80-99.5% at least one monoethylenically unsatd. 3-6C monocarboxylic acid (I) and (b) 0.5-20% at least one comonomer (II) having at least 2 ethylenic, non-conjugated double bonds and at least one COOX gp. (X = H, alkali or alkaline metal equiv. or NH4). Specifically, (A) may also include (c) 0.05-10% at least one other comonomer (III) with at least 2 ethylenic, non-conjugated double bonds.
