摘要 A ceramic fibre suitable for use in a Titanium matrix, has a first coating of a metal which can produce a thermodynamically stable oxide, and a second coating of that oxide. The oxide acts to inhibit diffusion of the Titanium into the ceramic when in situ in the matrix. The metal may be yttrium, zirconium or hafnium and the ceramic fibre may be more of silicon carbide. The metal may be deposited by plasma sputtering and the oxide subsequently applied by plasma sputtering. Alternatively the oxide may be formed by an oxide generating heat treatment. The oxide may also be formed by embedding the metal covered ceramic fibre in a titanium matrix from which the metal absorbs the necessary oxygen to form the oxide. Methods disclosed involve a) placing the coated fibres between sheets of titanium and subjecting the assembly to pressure and temperature; b) injecting another titanium into a mould containing the coated fibres; and c) placing the coated fibres on a sheet of titanium and then vacuum plasma spraying titanium onto the assembly. The reinforced material finds use as a strong, lightweight combustion material in the aerospace industry.
