In a device for controlling the coolant temperature of an internal combustion engine, especially in motor vehicles, with at least one coolant temperature sensor, with at least one further sensor for measuring an operating variable of the internal combustion engine, with a control device, which receives the sensor output signals and which controls a regulating device for influencing the coolant temperature as a function of the sensor output signals and a reference temperature, the reference temperature varying as a function of the measured operating variable, an inhibiting device is provided for appropriate adjustment of the coolant temperature to changing operating conditions of the internal combustion engine, which device prevents an adjustment of the reference temperature as a function of the operating variables if the operating variables vary within a predetermined period and/or within a predetermined range.
