PURPOSE:To obtain a satisfactory gradation reproducing characteristic by causing a CRT to emit light beams by means of a pulse string which has been converted in such a way that it is proportional to the weight of lowest-order bits in respective signals that are divided from digital video signals into a prescribed number and generating the hard copy of a TV picture on a recording medium. CONSTITUTION:The digital video signals of N bits are divided into m-number (N=nXm, (n) and (m) are integer more than '1') at every (n) bits. The original signals are converted into the pulse string with the density of (m) value, which causes the CRT 10 to emit light beams in such a way that it is proportional to the weight of the lowest-order bit in respective signals of (n) bits which are divided by (m). With the pulse string, the CRT 10 is caused to emit the light beams and the hard copy of the TV picture is generated on the recording medium 14. Therefore, the value of video signal is converted into pulse number of plural strength. The pulse can directly de impressed on a CRT cathode 12 and the accurate control of a light quantity can be executed. Thus, the satisfactory gradation reproducing characteristic can be obtained.
