PURPOSE:To obtain a copolymer with excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, high strength and good processability by polymerization of unsaturated carboxylic acids, aromatic vinyls, unsaturated nitriles, unsaturated esters and comonomers in the presence or absence of a thermoplastic resin under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:A copolymer which has an average composition satisfying equations I and II where component A distributes 1-90wt.% in the region containing less than 10wt.% of components iv and v, while distributes 99-10wt.% in the region containing over 10wt.%, is obtained by copolymerization of (A) (i) a maleimide monomer, (ii) unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, (B) (iii) aromatic vinyl monomers, (iv) unsaturated nitrile monomers, and (v) unsaturated ester monomers, and (C) other monomers copolymerizable with them, in the presence or absence of a thermoplastic resin or rubber polymer, so that copolymerization of is effected as varying the ratio of at least one of components A, iv and v to component iii followed by polymerization by addition of only monomers selected from components B and C.
