Vapour-impermeable plates 6, for example of ceramic material, each has fixed to its rear surface one or more anchoring elements 9 each embedded in a patch of mortar 4 to fix the plate in spaced relationship to a wall 1. The anchoring elements which are adhesively attached to the plates may be covered with synthetic resin to allow expansion movement to take place without destroying the bond to the wall. In a method of application, mortar portions 4a, 4b are separately applied to the plates 6 over the elements 9 and to the wall the mortar portions 4a, 4b being subsequently brought into contact. The mortar may contain a synthetic resin and an accelerator. A removable jig piece 20 is used to align adjacent plates with correct spacing therebetween. The anchoring elements may comprise separate parts such as 46, 47 Fig. 8 connected by a dovetail joint united by elastic adhesive 50. Several other embodiments are described.</p> |
