PURPOSE:To obtain carbon yarn having high strength and high modulus of elasticity in high yield, by preheating and carbonizing fire-resistant yarn made from AN yarn a raw material under specific conditions, respectively. CONSTITUTION:AN yarn is heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at 200-300 deg.C to give fire-resistant yarn having >=1.40 specific gravity and preheated in a nonoxidizing atmosphere at 300-420 deg.C. Then the yarn is carbonized in an atmosphere containing a hydrogen halide in a temperature range of >=1,000 deg.C at 1,300-1,600 deg.C maximum temperature. Total draw ratio in the preheating and carbonization is <=25% to eliminate troubles such as end breakage of yarn bundle, etc.
