The measurement of the diameter of an elongate element such as an optical fiber while running is performed by means of two opto-electronic systems (6, 7) of which the optical axes (x, y) are perpendicular to each other and to the running axes of the object (1), each system comprising a microscope lens (9) forming a blurred image of the object on a bar (11) of photodetectors, and means for calculating by interpolation the accurate position of each edge of the object.
