PURPOSE:To obtain a uniform domain as to the bistable state of liquid crystal molecules by constituting the bistable array of liquid crystal molecules which are alternated through voltage application by a uniaxial orientation film in a chiral smectic phase state. CONSTITUTION:Chiral smectic liquid crystal (SmC*) is held between a couple of substrates 1 and 1 which are arranged opposite each other and uniaxial horizontal orientation films 2 and 2 provided on the surfaces of the substrates 1 and 1 contact both surface of the thin film of SmC*. Polarizing plates 11 and 11 are arranged opposite each other having their axes of polarization at right angles to hold the thin film of SmC* and serve as optical converting elements which discriminates the bistable states of liquid crystal molecules optically by utilizing birefringence. For example, in the 1st stable state, light is transmitted and in the 2nd stable state, the light is cut off; and a uniform bistable domain of SmC* molecules needs to be obtained for complete light transmission-shield operation. This uniform domain is obtained by using SmC* having a phase shift of, specially, isotropic liquid, a cholesteric liquid crystal phase, smectic A, SmC*, and a crystals state.
