PURPOSE:To discriminate between a noise group and a star image group by grouping picture elements corresponding to an image pickup signal from a solid-state image pickup element which is larger than a threshold value in view of the continuity of the picture elements and fixing proper discrimination conditions. CONSTITUTION:A group A is discriminated firstly among picture data stored in a RAM10 at the start of processing. In this discrimination, a flag with which it is recognized that group constituent picture elements belong to, for example, A is set for each picture element data. Then, while this flag is detected, picture elements constituting the group A are counted (302), a star image is discriminated if the number of picture elements is >=9 (303), and the position of the star (1) is calculated by centroid calculation (304). If the number of picture elements is <=9, on the other hand, they are discriminated as noises and a flag which indicating a noise is set for each picture element data, which is discriminated from other groups.
