The invention relates to an apparatus and a process for the gasification of carbonaceous fuels by heating the fuel, with the exclusion of air and with the formation of carbonisation gases, in a carbonisation zone (II), subsequent coking in a coking zone (III), oxidation of the consequently produced coal (coke) and the carbonisation gases, with oxygen being supplied, in an oxidation zone (IV) and subsequent reduction with the aid of coal originating from the coking zone in a reduction zone (V). In order to provide a process and an apparatus with the aid of which it is possible to gasify in particular even carbonaceous material which is fine-grained and/or in the form of chips in such a way that, with a high throughput of fuel, there is produced essentially only a pollutant-free gas of high calorific value and otherwise mineral ash, it is proposed according to the invention that, by blowing oxygen-containing gas (air) into an essentially solids-free oxidation zone (IV), the carbonisation gas is sucked into the said solids-free oxidation zone (IV), with separation of the solid constituents of the carbonisation gas zone (III), and is burned essentially completely, the intake path for the carbonisation gas running from the coking zone (III) through the carbonisation zone (II) and a drying zone (I), lying thereabove, and to an essentially solids-free intake region (VI), which is in direct connection with the oxidation zone (IV), and that the reduction takes place in a supporting bed (38). <IMAGE>
