4,9-Dihydro 4-(1-methyl 4-piperidylidene) 10H-benz(4,5)cyclohepta (1,2-b)thiophen-10-one is made by reacting 10-methoxy 4-(4-piperidyl)4H-benzo (4,5)cyclohepta(1,2-b) thiophen-4-ol with formaldehyde and formic acid in an inert medium. The prod. is isolated by conventional methods and crystallised from organic solvent, e.g. methanol, ethanol or their mixts. with water. - The reaction is carried out in water or its mixts. with DMF, DMSO or others, in an open system or autoclave, at 70-130 deg.C.
