PURPOSE:To obtain a clear image having high degree of resolution by providing a pair of electrode and a liquid layer contg. a polymer capable of absorbing the liquid by the effect of an electric field and desorbing the liquid in non- electric field. CONSTITUTION:An optical element comprises a substrate 1, a liquid layer 2 contg. gel, a transparent protecting plate 3, a picture element electrode 7 and a counter electrode 8. The layer 2 comprises the liquid and liquid absorbing and desorbing polymer. When an electric field is applied to the polymer, the polymer swells absorbing the liquid. When the electric field is interrupted, the polymer contracts desorbing the liquid. When the switch 5-2 is turned OFF, the gel 4-2 contracts preserving its very small parti-size. So the light 9-2 is scattered or refracted by the gel 4-2, and the rectilinear propagating characteristic of light is inhibited. On one hand, when a switch 5-2 is turned ON, the gel 4-1 is swollen. As the result, the scattering and refracting characteristics for light are lost, so the light 9-1 can proparagate rectilinearly. Since the gel can be made to very fine particle size, a clear image having high degree of resolution is obtd.
