Preparing new derivatives of melamine which are soluble or dispersible in water, by reacting together, simultaneously or in any order, 1 mole of hexamethylolmelamine, almost entirely etherified by a low m.wt. alcohol, with (A) one or more monocarboxylic acid containing 1-30C, (B) from 0.5 to 1.2 mole of a tertiary amine containing at least one hydroxyalkyl group having 2 to 4 C atoms, and (C) from 0.5 to 2.5 mole of a aliphatic alcohol or mixture of such, containing 12 to 30C atoms, and treating the resultant product with a quaternising agent. 80% at least of the tert. amine must be in the form of a salt of the acid or mixture of monocarboxylic acids; the total quantity of monocarboxylic acid or acids must be 0.4 to 2.5 moles; the proportion of monocarboxylic acid or acids containing 12 to 30C atoms must be such that the sum of the molar quantities of aliphatic alcohol or alcohols and the monocarboxylic acid or acids containing 12 to 30 C atoms is at least 1 and at maximum 2.5 moles. The reaction is carried out without a solvent, or in the presence of a solvent such as xylene, mono-or dichlorobenzene, paraffin etc., at temps. of 100 deg. to 200 deg.C., preferably 120 deg. to 180 deg.C.
|
