A colour television signal characteristic of a first standard system, e.g. a 525 line N.T.S.C. signal, is converted to a second standard system, e.g. a 625 line PAL signal, by splitting the incoming signal into luminance and chrominance components in a filter 1, Fig. 2, producing a new chrominance signal by frequency mixing in a modulator 5, the new signal having a subcarrier frequency which is lower than the original and is an integral multiple of the line frequency of the first system, converting the new chrominance signal to the synchronizing standard of the second system, e.g. using a scanned monochrome vidicon tube converter 9, changing the sub-carrier frequency of the converted chrominance signal to the desired sub-carrier frequency of the second system, and then combining the resulting chrominance signal with the luminance signal which has meanwhile been converted to the second system in a converter 10. In Fig. 2 the frequency mixing process to produce the new chrominance signal comprises producing in a frequency, divider and multiplier 7 a signal having a frequency <SP>9</SP>/ 7 times the signal colour sub-carrier frequency (3À6 Mc/s. for N.T.S.C.) and combining this with the original sub-carrier to produce a difference signal having a frequency <SP>2</SP>/ 7 times the original sub-carrier frequency. The 4À43 Mc/s. PAL subcarrier frequency is generated at 13 and is combined in a modulator 14 with the 65 TL multiple of this frequency from a multiplier 15. Band pass filters 16, 17 select one side band each from the resulting signal and an electronic switch 18 alternately supplies these to a modulator 19 where they combine with the converted chrominance signal. A filter 20 selects one of the side band products and combines it with the converted and transit time compensated luminance signal in an adder 21. The arrangement of Fig. 3 is modified by the addition in an adder 28 of a pilot signal to the new chrominance signal prior to conversion. In this case the frequency mixing produces a new colour sub-carrier frequency of 130 fH ( fH = half-line frequency) the pilot signal frequency being 260 fH . After conversion the pilot signal is brought, by means of a filter 33 and frequency divider 36, to the frequency of the converted chrominance signal and is used in demodulators 34, 35 to produce colour difference signals. The need for a separator standards converter for the luminance component is avoided in a modification in which the pilot signal is used as the sub-carrier for the luminance information. Various modifications of these basic circuits are disclosed.
