This invention provides a multi-stage evaporator which includes a heat-recycling capability. The heat contained in the exhaust vapours from the last stage of the evaporator is transformed at least partially into useful heat of which the temperature lies significantly above the exhaust vapour temperature. This useful heat can then be fed back to the early stages of the evaporator. The heat recycling portion consists of a combination of a vapour compressor and an apparatus operating on the heat transformation principle.
