The method consists in treating the metallic workpieces with a jet of nitrogen-containing plasma. For this purpose, the surface to be treated is scanned with the plasma jet. In the course of this, the average temperature of the plasma jet should be at least 6000 DEG K, the pressure exerted by the jet on the surface to be treated should be (0.03...1) x 10<5> N/m<2> and the scanning rate should be 1 x 10<-3> to 20 x 10<-2> m/s.
