PURPOSE:An electrode base material for a fuel cell, in which a carbon material is heated in a specific atmosphere and fluorin gas is introduced to fluorinate a carbon surface and hold a water repellent. CONSTITUTION:A carbon material is heated to about 120 deg.C under a vacuum or inactive atmosphere to removed impurities in a carbon fiber surface constituting the carbon material. Then said material is heated to at least 350 deg.C and fluorin gas is introduced to form a side chain of CF2 or CF3 to the carbon fiber surface and provide a water repellent to the carbon material. By this process, deterioration of a water repellent of the carbon material as the electrode base material for a fuel cell can be suppressed. While fine holes in the carbon material are never blocked, and good ventilation can be also obtained to increase performance of the cell. |
