PURPOSE:To make the thickness of a metallic film uniform in applying the metallic film to the surface of an optical fiber by the sputtering method, by reflecting sputtered particles from an ionic source on a concave reflecting mirror, and passing the optical fiber through the vicinity of the focus thereof. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 2 to be coated with a metal is passed through vacuum sealing parts 3 and 4 and a through-hole 6 of a target 5 and continuously through a vacuum chamber 1. Ar beams (B) are projected from an ionic source 8 simultaneously to the target 5, sputtered particles are concentrated on the focal position of a concave surface (5a) by the rotation of the target 5 and uniformly applied to the periphery of the optical fiber 2 passing through the place in the form of a metallic mist. Thus, the aimed optical fiber, coated with the metal, and having uniform strength and heat resistance can be easily prepared. |
