A Michael condensation product is prepared from alpha -acetyl- alpha min -methylsuccinate esters and isobutyl vinyl ketone using a dipolar, aprotic liquid solvent, preferably a dialkyl sulfoxide, a dialkylformamide or a dialkylacetamide, and potassium tert-butoxide. The Michael product of this process can be converted to ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory drug.
