A process for the preparation of an amide of the formula
<Chemistry id="chema01" num="0001"><Image id="ia01" he="6" wi="77" file="IMGA0001.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>wherein R is an eventually substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl or phenyl group, by hydrolysis of a nitrile of the formula (II)

This process is useful for the preparation of amides of formula (III)

These amides can be decomposed in amines by a halogen or a hypohalite in the presence of a base.
