The continuous counter consists of an up-down counter (Z) to whose forward counting input is connected the pulse train to be measured (fx). The data output of the counter controls a digital divider or rate multiplier (T). The divider divides the reference pulse train from a clock generator (fo) in accordance with the digital output of the counter. The resulting signal is fed to the reverse counting input of the digital counter (R). The figure appearing in the counter display (A) is the moving (exponential) average of the frequency of the pulse train being measured (fx). The average period of the pulse train can also be continuously measured if this signal is fed to the input of the divider and the reference frequency (fo) is fed to the forward counting input (V) of the digital counter.
