Iminodibenzyl compounds of the formula <FORM:0977647/C1/1> wherein Y is a straight or branched lower alkylene radical, are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0977647/C1/2> wherein R2 represents an aryl radical and R3 and R4 are each a hydrogen atom or an aryl radical, with a chloroformate of the formula <FORM:0977647/C1/3> wherein R represents a lower alkyl radical, to form an N-[(N1-lower-alkyl-N1-carbo -R-oxyamino)-lower-alkyl] iminodibenzyl of the formula <FORM:0977647/C1/4> and hydrolysing this compound with barium peroxide. The word "lower" indicates that the groups so qualified contain up to 8 carbon atoms. N-[(N1-lower-alkyl-N1-arylmethylamino) lower-alkyl] iminodibenzyls of formula II are prepared by reacting an alkali metal iminodibenzyl salt (prepared by reacting an alkali metal hydride or amide with iminodibenzyl) with an N-lower-alkyl-N-arylmethylamino lower-alkyl halide in a high boiling liquid reaction medium such as xylene, toluene, tetralin or cumene. |
