PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the titled steroid, capable of linking to a carrier, e.g. peptides, etc., and useful for immunoassay, e.g. various hormones, etc., by subjecting a 4-ene-3-oxosteroid to specific reaction steps. CONSTITUTION:A 4-ene-3-oxosteroid compound expressed by formula I (Q is a substituent group on the steroid skeleton), e.g. 11alpha-hydroxyprogesterone, etc., is initially ketalized to provide a compound expressed by formula II (rings C and D are omitted; the same applies hereinafter), which is then epoxidized to afford a compound expressed by formula III (alpha-isomer) and formula IV (beta-isomer). The epoxy compound expressed by formula III (alpha-isomer) is then reacted with 2-carboxyethylthioalcohol to introduce 2-carboxyethylsulfinyl group into the 6-position and the resultant compound expressed by formula V is then deketalized to provide a compound expressed by formula VI, which is subsequently subjected to dehydration reaction to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula VII.
