PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new malfunction detection device for an air fuel ratio sensor capable of detecting malfunction more exactly. SOLUTION: In the malfunction detection device for the air fuel ratio sensor including the air fuel ratio sensor 10 arranged in an exhaust gas passage of an internal combustion engine and detecting air fuel ratio based on electromotive force generated by oxygen concentration difference between atmospheric air and exhaust gas, and an air fuel ratio sensor activation means 26 activating the air fuel ratio sensor 10, activation of the air fuel ratio sensor 10 is maintained after stopping the internal combustion engine (step 101) and malfunction of the air fuel ratio sensor 10 is detected based on output I(t) of the air fuel ratio sensor after a first predetermined period of time t1 passed from stop of the internal combustion engine.
