PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the success rate of self-starting an engine, in which combustion of a fuel in a combustion chamber starts rotating a crank shaft and starts the engine. SOLUTION: In the V type engine provided with a variable valve mechanism making an operation angle and a lift amount of an intake valve variable, when an idle stop condition is materialized to automatically stop the engine, it is changed smaller than an operation angle-lift amount required for continuation of engine starting. When re-starting requirement is generated, first explosion pressure is obtained by fuel injection and ignition to a cylinder being stopped in an expansion stroke to start starting of the engine. After the first intake stroke, the operation angle-lift amount of each bank is increased/varied with time difference. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
