An electrolytic electrode has substrate of conductive metal with an intermediate coating and a top coating of electrodeactive substance. The intermediate coating consists of P dispersed in a conductive mixed oxide consisting of (a) TiO2 and/or SnO2 and (b) Ta2O5 and/or Nb2O5. The substrate consist of Ti, Ta, Nb, Zr or its alloy, or a conductive metal coated with a P-Gp. metal or valve metal. The mixed oxide contains 1-50 mol% dispersed P and the (A):(B) molar ratio (as metal) is 95:5 to 10:90. The metal substrate is heated in an oxidizing atmos. pref. at 350-600 deg.C to form the intermediate layer and then coated with the electrodeactive substance, pref. by a thermal decomposition method.
