The apparatus according to the invention comprises improved apparatus for verifying cards which are double punched in two stages with the card slightly displaced at the second punching so as to form an oval hole from two overlapping circular punchings, and which are punched in both normal and interstage horizontal rows. The combination on one card of the features of interstage recorded data 12, i.e. additional holes punched in the spaces between normal horizontal rows 11, Fig. 1, and the oval holes 15, 16, resulting from checking by double punching gives rise to the necessity for reducing the size of the double punched oval holes to avoid overlapping of adjacent holes. The method of double punching for verification is described in Specification 363,431 and apparatus for testing such cards is described in Specification 362,770. A set of pins 32 is provided for each vertical column and are actuated by two lower portions 17, 18, disposed in endwise abutting relationship. The lower portion 18 of each pin is formed with an oval shank 29 and tapering shoulders 30 leading to a circular tip of smaller diameter 31. The intermediate portions 17 are each provided with a horizontal pin 23 which engages in one of the slots 24 in a testing plate 25. The card to be checked is placed in the sensing chamber formed between plates 26, 27, and is located by a card stop 28. When the pins are brought into contact with the card the pins will assume positions shown in Fig. 2, according to the state of the punching in the card. Thus, where there is no hole the pin as shown at C will rest on the card and the horizontal pin 23 is clear of the abutment in the slot 24. Where two punching operations have produced an oval punching showing that the data has been correctly verified the shank 29 of the pin passes through the card as shown at B. The intermediate portion 17 following the portion 18 descends and the horizontal pin 23 is again clear of the abutment in the slot 24. Where, however, a circular hole remains after the second punching showing that the data has not been correctly verified the tip of the member 18 passes through and the shoulders 30 rest on the sides of the hole preventing the shank 29 from entering as shown at A. The resulting partial movement of the member 17 brings the horizontal pin 23 into line with the abutment of the hole 24 so that when the testing plate 25 is moved longitudinally it is prevented from making its full normal travel by the pin 23. This obstruction is used to give a signal to the operator that an incorrectly punched card is in the sensing chamber.
